How Michael J Fox and Tracy Pollan Raised Four Grounded Children Amid Family Life and Health Challenges

While Michael J. Fox is widely recognized for his iconic acting career and groundbreaking Parkinson’s disease advocacy, he has consistently maintained that his most meaningful role is being a husband and father.

Married for over three decades, Fox and his wife, actress Tracy Pollan, have raised four children together: Sam, twins Aquinnah and Schuyler, and Esmé. Throughout Fox’s long journey with Parkinson’s disease, the couple focused on creating a home environment centered around open communication, humor, and mutual support.

A Parenting Philosophy Centered on Presence

Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 when his eldest son was a toddler, Fox and Pollan initially kept the diagnosis private before going public in 1998. Rather than letting the condition create emotional distance, Fox adopted a straightforward approach to parenting: always showing up and being present for his children.

Over the years, Fox has frequently shared his pride in how his children have developed strong senses of empathy and independence through navigating life’s challenges as a family.

The Four Fox Children

Each of the four siblings has built an independent career and personal path:

  • Sam Michael Fox (b. 1989): Working primarily behind the scenes in film and media, Sam served as a producer on the 2023 documentary Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, which detailed his father’s life and advocacy work.
  • Aquinnah Kathleen Fox (b. 1995): A graduate of Duke University, Aquinnah works in the film and creative industry in Los Angeles.
  • Schuyler Frances Fox (b. 1995): After graduating from Pomona College, Schuyler earned a master’s degree in education from Harvard University and works in educational media production.
  • Esmé Annabelle Fox (b. 2001): The youngest of the siblings, Esmé attends Duke University and maintains a private life outside of the public eye.

Resilience and Foundation Through Advocacy

Through the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research—which has raised over $2 billion toward research and treatment—Fox’s family experiences have remained central to his outlook. Despite facing significant physical setbacks, surgeries, and the loss of his mother in 2022, Fox credits his family with keeping him grounded and optimistic.

Instead of measuring success purely through screen credits or public recognition, Fox emphasizes that maintaining close family bonds remains his greatest priority.
